Synopsis

The university is one of the most enduring institutions in existence. It has survived wars, revolutions, regime changes and economic collapses whilst keeping its mission intact: to produce, preserve, convey and transfer knowledge. But in every era, it decides how to fulfil that mission. And few factors have weighed as heavily on that decision as technology. The recent history of the university can be seen as a series of technical changes that have altered what we understand by knowledge, how we produce it, how we teach it and how we transfer it.
