Synopsis

This collaborative study aims to provide some evidence and offer a range of reflections on the implications of the growth in holiday accommodation.

The work is divided into two parts. The first comprises a report prepared by researchers at the University of Málaga (UMA) which, using a quantitative approach based on two types of analysis – linear regression and spatial correlation – seeks to explain the extent to which the existence and concentration of holiday homes affects the rise in rental prices in the city of Málaga.

The second part of the publication includes a series of contributions on holiday accommodation that examine the phenomenon from various perspectives. It analyses the impacts of touristification on the urban ecosystem and, in particular, on the resident population; and, from a legal perspective, it examines the regulation of the duties and responsibilities of digital platforms in the holiday rental sector, the town planning of this type of accommodation, and the possibilities offered by tax law for levying tax on stays in these properties.
