Imperfect intelligences: Bioethics, Liberal Eugenics and Embryonic Selection by Enhanced Cognition
Keywords:
Contemporary Bioethics, Liberal Eugenics, Cognitive Enhancement, Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), Transhumanism, Reproductive Autonomy, Intergenerational Responsibility, Embryo Selection, Human Dignity, Reproductive TechnologiesSynopsis
This essay-style manual analyses the ethical, legal and philosophical dilemmas arising from the increasing availability of embryos selected for their cognitive potential in the context of assisted reproduction and eugenic human enhancement. Adopting a critical stance, the text engages in a dialogue between bioethics, biomedicine, and political philosophy, examining the implications of liberal eugenics, transhumanism, and the broader concept of the technification of human life.
The main concepts involved in the debate, such as dignity, autonomy, procreative beneficence and intergenerational responsibility, are clarified throughout the four chapters. Arguments in favour of embryonic enhancement are presented and the most relevant ethical objections are discussed in detail. The text defends the normative limits of the precautionary principle as an alternative to a technocratic logic which tends to render inequality, the commodification of life and the degradation of generational justice invisible.
Through case studies, academic sources and ten educational activities, the text contributes to current bioethical thinking with a particular focus on the right to plurality, the fragility of consent and the need to protect a shared vision of humanity.
